Class Observation 1/20/2026 with Ryan Flemming

On January 20, 2026, I observed Mr. Flemming teaching an online English speaking class for intermediate-level students. The session was hosted through Zoom, with class materials located on Canvas, to which all had access. Once students entered the session and I was introduced to them, Mr. Flemming introduced the week's agenda. Today, they had to do presentations and prepare for class discussions. He then pulled up a document showing a list of things students had mentioned during the first week that they struggled with and wanted to work on in the future. He then went over how they've covered some of that so far and how they will work on that in the future. Mr. Flemming then went over the presentation rubric, how they will be graded, and then gave a brief overview of the class discussion assignment. After a brief question segment, the first student gave her presentation.

Students had created a slide presentation that they would then present. Mr. Flemming recorded students individually as they spoke, to give feedback later and go over with them. The first student's presentation was on the top 3 differences in Indian weddings across generations. While she spoke, Mr. Flemming had a paper to take notes on her speech. The student started out her presentation by asking the class what had changed from the 80's to now. The student then transitioned to talking about the change in weddings over time, discussing how today it has become more casual and functional than the typical traditional wedding. She also spoke on how weddings were more fun today, the end of the dowry system, and the greater independence of couples. She then spoke on the 3 key differences she had seen within her own family. She first spoke on couples deciding to marry, shifting from it being only the family's business, to allowing input of their children, to now it is solely up to the parties getting married how they meet and start their relationship. She then proceeded with her next two differences, speaking based off her prepared speech she had submitted as a draft to Mr. Flemming to review.

Once finished, there was time for questions before the student presented true and false questions based on their presentation. After, the next student started her presentation on important things to know when living in the USA. Unfortunately, technical issues ended the Zoom call early, but all students were able to present. In his paper, Mr. Flemming wrote grammar and pronunciation feedback, explaining his thought processes and feedback.
