Melina CO Blog Post #5 = Listening with Prof. Fleming
Date/Time: January 16th, 2025, 10:00-10:40
Topic/Skill: Listening, Low-Intermediate Level (Listening to Writing Skills)
Teacher Presentation: Prof. Fleming played an audio recording regarding motivation, including different kinds of motivation (intrinsic or extrinsic, etc.), having students fill in a worksheet that included multiple choice questions about the content. He played the audio three times, and then encouraged students to discuss their answers before reviewing. Afterward, he virtually distributed a google form about the main idea of the audio, reviewing the correct answer after it was completed by the students.
Classroom Management: Prof. Fleming floated around the class during the time the students used to answer the questions on the worksheet, as well as during their group discussion segment, making sure that students were on the right track with their answers, and encouraging communication between them.
Materials: Video, Worksheet, Google form
Student Participation: Students listened to the audio provided and filled in their worksheets, discussed their results in a group, and filled out the google form sent by Prof. Fleming.
Feedback Provided: Prof. Fleming made note of any errors made by students and addressed them at the front of the class, kindly and specifically noting why one multiple choice answer was inferior to the correct answer.
Lesson(s) on teaching you learned: During this session, I learned the importance of giving students an opportunity to discuss activities amongst themselves, instead of immediately addressing any errors made. Discussion gives students the chance to teach each other, growing their connections. Additionally, it is a chance for students to realize their mistakes without the help of the instructor. I am very grateful to have had the opportunity to sit in on Prof. Fleming's class!
