Date/Time: Friday, January 23rd, 2026, from 10:50 AM - 12:30 PM

Topic/Skill: Intensive Reading Review, Comprehension Questions, and Introduction of Context Clues

Teacher Presentation: With support from the CIES textbook, Dr. Rios reviewed the article from the day before, provided comprehension questions, and introduced the strategy of context clues.

Classroom Management: Dr. Rios floated between the two students, observing their work as they completed their comprehension quizzes and article summary. He provided linguistic support as needed, providing spelling, grammar explanations, etc.

Materials: CIES textbook, Canvas

Student Participation: Students completed their quiz and article summary. Dr. Rios called on students to read sections of the textbook and answer follow-up questions.

Feedback Provided: Dr. Rios would allow students to answer questions, then provide follow-up questions that would provoke identification of mistakes. Dr. Rios also administered evaluation tactics (comprehension quiz and written summary) to assess how well the students understood the subject matter.

Lesson(s) on Teaching I Learned: Dr. Rios was very candid with me before his students arrived and during the break when the students left for the lounge. He admitted that this particular group of Beginner students has tested his teaching skills, despite years of experience in language education. He has had to use trial and error a lot for this session. We discussed how difficult it can be to have a student who is upper-beginner and lower-beginner, trying to find materials for both of them without making the difference obvious. This was an excellent class for me to observe, as it provided me an opportunity to witness a different classroom dynamic than the other classes I have observed so far.
