Melina CO #4 = Listening with Prof. Fleming

Melina CO Blog Post #4 = Listening with Prof. Fleming

Date/Time: January 16th, 2025, 9:00-9:50

Topic/Skill: Listening, Low-Intermediate Level (Listening to Writing Skills)

Teacher Presentation: Prof. Fleming sourced a video discussing Strozier Library, and provided worksheets with the transcript of the video's audio portion, with blanks for the students to fill in. On the worksheet, there were also word banks with the words necessary to fill the blanks (providing linguistic support to students).

Classroom Management: During this portion of the lesson, Prof. Fleming kept careful watch of his students to look for signs of possible struggle with the content, making sure to ask if students needed any assistance, or if they desired to have the video played again. He defined any confusing or difficult words using the white board or projecting images as visual aides. Prof. Fleming also did the activity along with his students to check for difficult portions.

Materials: Youtube video, whiteboard, markers, worksheets

Student Participation: Students listened carefully to the video provided multiple times. Afterward, they grouped together to discuss their answers and finish their worksheets.

Feedback Provided: Prof. Fleming floated near the students, noting which blanks were consistently unfilled across their worksheets, providing support through subsequent definitions of the appropriate words on the board.

Lesson(s) on teaching you learned: During this session, I learned the importance of testing out one's own lesson, especially in front of students. This seems to make students feel more comfortable, as well as provides the instructor with an opportunity to see in real time how parts of the lesson may be more difficult to complete.
