Melina CO #7 = Speaking with Dr. Rios
Melina CO Blog Post #7 = Speaking with Dr. Rios
Date/Time: January 16th, 2025, 11:40-12:30
Topic/Skill: Speaking, Low-Intermediate Level (Drafting Presentations)
Teacher Presentation: During this segment of the class session, Dr. Rios utilized the white board to demonstrate the appropriate format for a biographical presentation, giving the students the opportunity to choose an American celebrity of their choice for their projects. He pointed out common mistakes made when utilizing the format presented, as well as noted particular attributes he would be looking for while grading.
Classroom Management: Dr. Rios presented his format at the front of the room, commanding the class's attention by projecting his voice, as well as using humor and personal anecdotes to keep them engaged.
Materials: Whiteboard, markers, projector
Student Participation: Students began researching American celebrities, submitting the name of their choice to the Google Classroom, which Dr. Rios projected on the screen (for the purpose of allowing students to view the choices their peers had made).
Feedback Provided: Though this segment of the class was not reliant on particular feedback from teacher to student, Dr. Rios did make a point to comment on each of the celebrities chosen by the students, as well as taking the time to preempt possible mistakes by discussing possible misinterpretations of his directions.
Lesson(s) on teaching you learned: Dr. Rios's class (as well as the others I observed) reinforced the importance of using humor and personal anecdotes to lower students' affective filters, and make them more receptive and willing to learn. I was honored to be a part of Dr. Rios's class for the day!
