Julia CO #5- Professor Flemming's Speaking Class.

 Today there is a quiz in class. Professor Flemming always introduces the class while taking attendance and reviewing the day's agenda. Today, the students did a vocabulary quiz and a comprehension quiz. Because the class is split into two groups, there are two quizzes. We are also discussing summaries in this class, and we will make summaries based on the lecture we have been working on this week about social media. Professor Flemming always checks to make sure everyone knows the instructions with a phrase like, "Do you guys want any more information about the plan for today?" For the comprehension quiz, students were allowed to use their notes, but not to listen to the audio again. There were multiple-choice questions about the main idea and details of the lecture. There's also a transcription section where students either match the audio to the correct transcription or type it out themselves. There was also vocabulary in context in which students heard a specific word, in this case, that word was cyberbullying, and they defined it with the context of the lecture. 

After the quizzes, we focused on summaries. Professor Flemming first asked someone to define it, then looked up the dictionary definition. They had a brief class discussion about the difference between paraphrasing and summarizing. We were shown a summary of a lecture the students had already seen. 

The professor then broke down the structure of a summary: an introductory sentence, a main idea, and one sentence for each supporting detail. 

Students were given a set of sentences to choose from and then selected which sentences to place where in the summary. Students had to distinguish which sentences were the main points and which weren't. Some sentences were too specific or too general for the summary; students had to make that distinction. Students then had to order the sentences within the correct structure.
